I think that it is also important to remember that the only differentiation between humans and non-human animals is our genetic code, our species membership. We don’t have control over what species we are born into, so it is not okay to discriminate on this basis. The same can be said about race, sex, and gender – and these, too, are not appropriate forms of discrimination. We must remember that our rights are always interconnected, and so we must work as a community to humanise animals – to draw them back into the moral community.
I’m sure many of you share my belief that no animal should be subjected to cruelty. It is this, at the very least, that we owe them.
